About this Course
This is an Accredited Course by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), at MQF/EQF Level 6, with 180 ECTS.
The first year of the programme focuses on providing students with a solid foundation of the underlying principles in Travel and Tourism. Students will undertake study units in Hospitality Management, Travel Geography and Destination Management.
The second year of the programme builds on the knowledge of the first year and delves into the Financial, Human Resources and Operational principles within the travel and tourism industry. Students will also be exposed to knowledge and skills in Event Management and Tourism Marketing. Beyond the core units, students will undertake a project, hence get the opportunity to focus on a particular area that is of interest to them as well as acquiring skills in project planning.
The final year consolidates on the first two years of the programme. Students will have an opportunity to further develop their critical skills and deepen their knowledge of complex issues surrounding the travel and tourism industry. Learners will obtain knowledge on sustainable tourism, tourism law and policy, cross-cultural communication, and the diverse interests of tourists.
Besides solidifying their knowledge regarding important topics in travel and tourism, this qualification also promotes the development of transversal skills in students through modules such as Academic Writing and Critical Thinking and Communication.
Furthermore, this programme consolidates the research skills of students through the Research Methods module, the Project, and the Dissertation. This programme will equip students with the necessary competencies to:
- Fulfil a variety of roles in the travel and tourism sector.
- Make responsible and informed decisions within the field.
- Develop and exhibit critical thinking and academic writing skills.
- Analyse, investigate, and solve a real problem within the travel and tourism industry, enhancing their research and practical skills.
Learning Outcomes
The learner will be able to:
- Gain a solid foundation with regards to the introductory concepts in tourism and the principles of hospitality management (Modules 1 and 2).
- Evaluate the factors that create attractive travel destinations (Module 5)
- Discuss the role of the financial department, HR, and operations management in a travel and tourism context (Module 7).
- Assess the fundamental concepts and theories of event management in the tourism industry (Module 8).
- Critically analyse and evaluate the marketing environment and consumer behaviour in the tourism sector, as well as how marketing and destination management adapts to meet changes in the business environment. (Modules 6 and 9).
- Discuss and review how different research methods can be applied appropriately to the field of tourism (Module 10).
- Develop advanced knowledge on the main concepts of responsible tourism planning, sustainable development, and sustainable management (Module 12).
- Recognise and appreciate the diverse interests and preferences of tourists across various tourism niches (Module 13).
- Navigate the legal and regulatory frameworks that govern the tourism industry (Module 14).
- Outline and critically examine examine the benefits and obstacles of cross-cultural communication in a travel and tourism context (Module 15).
- Navigate several applications and tools which can support and enhance the process of academic writing (Module 3).
- Compare and contrast the different approaches to critical thinking (Module 4).
- Detect, investigate, and address real-life problems related to the field and study referring to key theories (Modules 11 and 16).

Awarding Body
This qualification is awarded by IDEA Academy. This qualification is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. The MFHEA deems this Bachelor (Honours) in Travel and Tourism to be at MQF/EQF Level 6 with 180 ECTS in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course must possess:
- A related qualification at MQF Level 4 such as the IATA Foundation in Travel and Tourism Diploma. and/or
- One ‘A’ Level or equivalent and a pass in English Language* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).
In the case of mature students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted in the course.
Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA Academy, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning. Students whose first language is not
English and do not possess an ‘O’ level pass in English Language will be required to demonstrate English language capability at IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent. If an applicant does not meet the above entry requirements, you are encouraged to contact the Academy for an interview.
Course Structure
This is a part-time course that will typically take 38-54 months to complete. This programme comprises a total of 16 modules. The course comprises:
- Lectures per module depending on the number of ECTS (once or twice a week);
- 3-hour lectures;
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos;
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment Mode
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.
Language of Instruction & Delivery Mode
This programme will be delivered in English in our Campus in Mosta.
The course will be delivered through a flexible combination of modern face-to-face lectures, webinars, seminars and discussion forums, tutorials, group work, case studies, guest speakers, organisational visits and independent study.
