Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold:

  • 2 A Levels or equivalent MQF Level 4 qualifications OR
  • A minimum of 2 years working within business administration.

This course welcomes individuals from the legal age of 18 onwards. If an applicant does not meet the above entry requirements, you are encouraged to contact the Academy for an interview.

Assessment Mode

At the end of the course, students will be presented with the assignment questions, where students have four or five questions and need to choose three. The total word count for the total assignment is 3,000 words. Students need to submit the assignment as per the submission date on the assignment questions document provided. Grading: The assignment questions will be corrected and students must achieve a pass mark of at least 50 marks, in order to be given a certification.

    Course Syllabus:

    Module 1

    Award in Introduction to Payroll and Employment Administration (1 ECTS)

    At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

    - List number of important mandatory documents required for payroll purposes

    - Describe the purpose of important entities such as Jobsplus, Inland Revenue Department and Social Security Department

    - Describe the importance of a payroll system

    - Be coherent with control sheets (excel) used for payroll control purpose

    - Prepare list of required documents to be able to draft a basic contract of employment (with minimum details required by law)

    - Create an organised filing system for employees

    - Identify from where he/she can obtain important information related to payroll calculation

    - Categorise the different types of employment contracts

    - Advice on regulations controlling foreign workers in Malta

    - Comply with laws and regulations in relation to payroll and employment

    - Advice company directors and other managers on compliance issues with respect to payroll and employment

    - Develop an efficient records management system with respect to payroll and employment information

    - Represent the employer with relevant authorities in relation to basic payroll and employment issues

     

    Module 2

    Award in Payroll Related Tax & NI Contribution Matters (1 ECTS)

    At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

    - Identify which residence programme is more tax beneficial for a particular individual

    - Comply with Payroll related tax and National insurance contribution compliance obligations

    - Deal with the practical implications of such obligations (eg: completion of FS 5, FS 3 etc)

    - Advise on a number of Malta’s tax programmes

    - Compile payroll compliance documentation

    - Calculate national insurance payments for employees and self-employed individuals

    - Provide an overview of Malta’s tax and National Insurance Matters

    - Prepare standard payroll compliance documentation

    - Identify which tax rate a particular individual would qualify for (Single/Married/Parental)

    - Categorise an individual as a person liable to pay Class 1 or Class 2 social security

     

    Module 3

    Award in Payroll Accounting and Control (1 ECTS)

    At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

    - Deal with day-to-day tasks and queries relating to payroll

    - Manage timelines efficiently

    - Compute fringe benefit and tax calculations

    - Execute computations relating to Main Deduction Formula, Part Time and Other Emoluments Deduction methods

    - Develop, analyse and report fundamental KPIs from payroll system

    - Develop internal controls through the fine-tuning or creation of payroll controls to monitor and manage the recording of annual leave, sick leave, authorisations for work from home and other related matter

    - Identify and be able to complete FSS forms

    - Be conversant with the electronic services related to payroll processes

    - Prepare and execute a payroll run

    - Prepare the required control sheets for the payroll run

    - Generate management reports from payroll system

    - Estimate and execute payroll projections

    Award in Essentials of Employment Law (1 ECTS) 

    At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

    - Identify illegal (discriminatory) practices in recruitment

    - Include minimum legal clauses in an employment contract

    - Identify instances of workplace harassment, discrimination and victimisation

    - Identify what disciplinary actions are permitted and how to go about them to mitigate the impact of and avoid costly litigation

    - Determine how collective redundancies are deemed differently from individual redundancies

    - Identify principles emanating from the Act, such as the Equal pay for job of equal value

    - List the salient points of the Employment and Industrial Relations Act (EIRA)

    - Define what could be deemed as an unfair dismissal.

    - Distinguish termination procedures between fixed term and indefinite term employees

    - Describe family based rights that are applicable such as parental leave entitlements, urgent family leave entitlements and other family entitlements
