About this Course
This is an Accredited Course by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), at MQF/EQF Level 4, with 30 ECTS.
The objective of the OTHM Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care is to equip learners with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills required for a career in the health and social care sector at a support worker, senior support worker or care assistant level. The programme enables learners to demonstrate their skills by producing evidence from their work activities, to meet national occupational standards. Learners will acquire skills to support a role in the Health and Social Care sector or progress to further study.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the OTHM Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care programme, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities involved in working in a wide range of health and social care settings.
- Understand the importance of adhering to the agreed scope of the job role.
- Understand the importance of partnership working in health and social care.
- Understand what is required for competence in own work role.
- Be able to reflect on practice and understand how to evaluate own performance in the workplace.
- Understand personal development plans.
- Understand why effective communication is important in health and social care work settings.
- Meet the communication wishes and preferences of individuals and understand possible barriers to communication.
- Understand equality, diversity and inclusion within health and social care.
- Promote and implement health and safety in their work setting.
- Understand how to minimise the spread of infection.
- Identify different types of abuse, know how to recognise signs and symptoms that might indicate abuse is occurring.
- Understand person centred approaches utilised in health and social care.
- Understand ways of working in a person centred way.
- Understand the importance of establishing consent when providing support.
- Understand the importance of promoting active participation.
- Understand the issues of confidentiality and ethical practice relating to the storage and use of information.
- Understand skills needed to implement and promote good practice in recording, sharing, storing and accessing information.
Awarding Body
This qualification is awarded by OTHM. This qualification is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. MFHEA deems this OTHM Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care to be at MQF/EQF Level 4 with 30 ECTS in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should hold:
- Minimum Qualification: HSC, GCSE, grade 12, F.A or equivalent
- English Proficiency
Minimum Age: 16 If an applicant does not meet the above entry requirements, you are encouraged to contact the Academy for an interview.
Assessment Mode
- All units within this qualification are internally assessed by the centre and externally verified by OTHM. The qualifications are criterion referenced, based on the achievement of all the specified learning outcomes.
- To achieve a ‘pass’ for a unit, learners must provide evidence to demonstrate that they have fulfilled all the learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by all assessment criteria. Judgement that the learners have successfully fulfilled the assessment criteria is made by the Assessor. The Assessor should provide an audit trail showing how the judgement of the learners’ overall achievement has been arrived at
Language of Instruction & Delivery Mode
This programme will be delivered in English in our Campus in St. Julian’s.
The qualification is designed to be delivered over one academic year for full-time study, but it is also flexible in its delivery in order to accommodate part-time and distance learning. The qualification is delivered face-to-face, through lectures, tutorials, seminars, distance and online learning.
