About this Course
This is an Accredited Course by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), at MQF/EQF Level 3, with 4 ECTS.
The Still Image Award is an intermediate level photography course that explores various genres and advanced photography and lighting techniques. Meeting twice a week, students will develop their skillset in shaping light for portraits, landscapes, studio and understand the logistics associated with pre-production and planning a photography shoot from start to finish. Students will be introduced to editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom along with other workflow tools that will benefit their future as an aspiring photographer. Assessment criteria will find students keeping a creative journal, detailing their learnings and self-initiated studies along with the steps they’ve taken towards creating their end of course panel, a series of images resulting in a student exhibition at the end of the course.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the Still Image Award, the learner will be able to:
- Use natural lighting and composition to the best effect in their images.
- Handle and use digital photographic cameras.
- Understand the appropriate use of lenses.
- Assess the effects of natural light and composition in their own work.
- Evaluate photographic work to improve their photographic imagery.
- Handle new camera and photographic equipment in the market in the appropriate manner.
- Learn digital camera technology and respective terminology.
- Use digital image editing software programs.
- Use the ideal tools and post processing techniques to enhance images.
- Configure software programs.
- Identify the right software tools best suited for various subjects.
- Evaluate cropping and enhancement techniques best suited for various subjects.
- Studio photography equipment and materials.
- The principles of working on location and in a photography studio.
- Directing people during studio and location photography.
- Advanced and creative digital photography experimental techniques.
- Planning and preparation of photography exhibitions.
- A general understanding of the basis of marketing photography and related services.
- Choose the right methods for preparing and printing of exhibition images.

Awarding Body
This qualification is awarded by Malta Institute of Professional Photography. This qualification is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. MFHEA deems this Still Image Award to be at MQF/EQF Level 3 with 4 ECTS in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should hold:
- Be at least 16 years of age.
- Possess secondary leaving certificates to be presented upon enrolment.
- Provide a body of existing work in the form of twenty (20) digital or film scanned images for assessment.
- Available for an online introductory interview with course explanation and expected commitment.
- Have their own DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual exposure functionality and at least 1 lens.
- Access to their own computer or laptop with Adobe software subscriptions to Photoshop and Lightroom.

Assessment Mode
A reflective process diary must be kept by each student, through which an examiner is enabled to better assess the path and the extent of research employed by the student to develop their photography. An external independent verifier, appointed by the MIPP, will also take part in the assessment process. Marks will be awarded as follows:
- Ongoing Assessment: 15%
- Final Portfolio: 20%
- Practical: 20%
- Presentation: 10%
- Reflective Diary: 15%
- Performance & level of submitted images in Workshops: 20%
Language of Instruction & Delivery Mode
This programme will be delivered in English in our Campus in Paola as in-class lessons, together with on-location practical lessons. We operate as in an adult learning environment with the aim to emulate a real-life photography studio environment. Students will receive learnings through in person lectures, online resources, practical demonstrations by internal and external tutors and industry leaders.
