About this Course

This is an Accredited Course by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), at MQF/EQF Level 5 with 60 ECTS. This programme provides students with an understanding of how the financial markets operate, the key players and the issues that they are currently facing. Throughout this course students will be exposed to various elements of the financial word including money and banking and the different types of financial markets and instruments used in this industry. An important underlying aspect of this course is the Maltese laws and regulation which govern the industry. Furthermore, throughout this course students will also be exposed to equity market derivatives, which are complex investment vehicles being used in the financial services industry. This course also addresses anti-money laundering practices including terrorist financing and sanctions. Students will be made aware of various sanctions that exist and different ways how to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. Upon completion of this programme students will have a vast knowledge of how the financial system and the keys players operate, the importance of anti-money laundering and different ways howto value investment projects.

By the end of the Undergraduate Diploma in Anti-Money Laundering programme, the learner will be able to:

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold:

  • Relevant qualification at MQF/EQF level 4 which includes a module on Research Methods; OR
  • Relevant qualification at MQF/EQF level 4 and Research Methods as a module; OR
  • Relevant qualification at MQF/EQF level 4 and work experience in conducting first hand research; OR
  • At least 3-year relevant Industry Experience as defined in Domain Academy’s RPL which includes work experience in conducting first hand research.
  • If English is not your first language, you will need to sit for an internal English assessment.

Assessment Mode

Formative assessment The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by lecturers to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning and development. More specifically, formative assessments throughout the modules will: – help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need improvement – help lecturers recognise where students are struggling and address problems immediately Summative assessment Assessments will be designed according to the guidelines of each module specification. In general, the assessments will enable learners to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes across the individual elements of the program. The range of assessments utilized will normally include essays, reports, presentations and other structured assignments.

    Course Outline 

    Module 1 

    Introduction to Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Sanctions (10 ECTS)

    The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of what money laundering is and what forms of property can be laundered. This module also delves into the aspects of sanctions and why they are important.

     

    Module 2

    Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Terrorist Finance (10 ECTS)

    The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of customer due diligence,politically exposed persons, monitoring client activity and reporting suspicious activity.

     

    Module 3

    Combatting Terrorist Financing and Anti-Money Laundering in Practice (10 ECTS)

    The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of The Financial Action Task Force, The European Money Laundering Directives, the legislative and regulatory regimes and legislation regarding anti-money laundering and terrorist financing

     

    Module 4

    Management Obligations for Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing (10 ECTS)

    The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of risk-based approaches,the formulation of anti-money laundering and terrorist financing policies and procedures. This module delves into the monitoring compliance with policy and the culture that needs to be adopted.  Finally,this module provides insight to money laundering and terrorist financing vulnerabilities within the financial services industry and the risks with emerging technologies and new payment methods.

     

    Module 5

    Managing Finance (10 ECTS)

    The aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and  understanding of the basic skills and application in financial management in  order to properly assess the viability of investments and projects.

     

    Module 6

    Macroeconomics for Finance (8 ECTS)

    This units provides an overview of the economic theory relating to  financial markets. Throughout this unit the students will be exposed to the  various macroeconomic factors and how they affect the operations of financial  services. Understanding the macroeconomic environment is vital for the  success of a financial services firm.

     

    Module 7

    Fund Administration (8 ECTS)

    This units provides an overview of the funds industry by going into  the aspects of the local legal and regulatory framework for investment funds,  fund accounting and valuation principles and shareholder registry. This unit  concludes by showing the importance of compliance and risk management in the  funds industry.
