About this Course
This is an Accredited Course by the Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), at MQF/EQF Level 4, with 6 ECTS.
The Award at MQF Level 4 in Advanced Barbering Skills is intended for individuals with already a basic understanding of barbering principles or are already skilled in hairdressing or barbering sector and wish to update their skills in Men’s Hair Cuts and Beard Grooming.
To receive this Accredited Certificate in any of the Barbering Levels, you require the Award in Basic Barbering Skills course and the Award in Intermediate Barbering skills course.
Due to the vast experience in the Barbering Industry, Antonio (founder of Antonio’s Barber Shop) himself will be teaching you all the Old School Barbering Techniques, the importance of using the best equipment on the market to give you that sharp finishing look and most importantly, to distinguish yourself from competition in order to keep your clients coming back to you.
The programme provides the student practical learning on Cut Throat Razor Hot Towel Clean Shave, Head Shave, Beard Grooming, and the Fading Technique (Clipper over comb). The students are also expected to bring in models to practice different Styling techniques.
The programme is 12 weeks long and includes a theoretical and practical exam during the final week.
The maximum number of students per course is 6, as individual attention will be given to each attendee.
Target Audience
Applicants with no prior experience:
- Individuals who wish to pursue a career in barbering but do not necessarily have any experience can progress through the Award in Basic Barbering Skills and the Award in Intermediate Barbering Skills before starting this Award in Advanced Barbering Skills.
Applicants with prior experience:
- Individuals who have worked in barber shops and are keen to obtain a recognised qualification to match their skills are welcome to apply and can enroll directly into the Award in Advanced Barbering Skills if they hold a recognised hairdressing qualification at MQF Level 3.
This study programme is also applicable to qualified Hairdressers (holders of a recognised qualification at MQF Level 3) wishing to update their skills in Men’s Hair Cuts and Beard Grooming.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the benefits of massages on the skin, the position of facial bones and biological systems in the face
- Differentiate between different facial massages and related products
- Identify different types of hair shaving techniques
- Describe the procedure used for beard grooming
- Describe the procedure used for different types of male hair cuts
- Maintain the equipment used in razor and scissors cuts to ensure hygienic practices in salon
- Show how a cut throat razor and hot towel procedure is undertaken
- Make the necessary preparations for colouring beards and assist in beard colouring
- Demonstrate a number of hair cutting techniques, including:
- Short Haircut
- Long Haircut
- Clipper Cut

- Fade
- High Fade
- Low Fade
- Quiff cut
- Pompador cut
- Bob cut
- Mohawk cut
- Bowl Cut

Awarding Body
This qualification is awarded by AF & Co Academy. This qualification is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. MFHEA deems this Award in Advanced Barbering Skills course to be at MQF/EQF Level 4 with 6 ECTS in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
Entry Requirements
Considering the practical nature of the barbering skills, no academic qualifications are requested to join this programme, however, applicants are expected to have:
- completed Award in Basic Barbering Skills at MQF Level 2 and the Award in Intermediate Barbering Skills at MQF Level 3 OR
- completed a recognised hairdressing qualification at MQF Level 3
- at least 5 year prior experience working in a salon
- communicate in Maltese or English
Applicants must be over the age of 16
The Academy cannot accommodate Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – learning obtained through formal, non-formal and informal learning other than the mainstream certification.
If an applicant does not meet the above entry requirements, you are encouraged to contact the Academy for an interview.
Assessment Mode
The programme is 12 weeks long and includes a theoretical and practical exam during the final week.
Language of Instruction & Delivery Mode
This programme will be delivered in English in our Campus in Balzan.
You will follow all the lessons in class, through the use of your Cutting Tools Kit. The Cutting Tools Kit for this level needs to be purchased beforehand and a list of the said kit will be given as soon as you apply the course. You will need different models for the course.
