The Award at MQF Level 2 in Basic Barbering Skills is intended for individuals who have no prior knowledge or experience of hairdressing or barbering and wish to start their learning journey into barbering. The programme focuses on the theory of health & safety in barbering, the science of hair, hygienic practices in the salon, salon reception duties, and basic shampooing and conditioning and basic massage practices. The programme is 8 weeks long and includes a theoretical exam during the final week.

During this course you will learn all the required Health & Safety Regulations in the Barbering Industry. Due to the fact that you will be in contact with multiple clients, it is very important to protect both yourself and your client.

To receive an Accredited Certificate in any of the Barbering Levels, you require this Certificate. This Level will then lead you to the Award in Intermediate Barbering and finally, the Award in Advanced Barbering skills course.

Due to the vast experience in the Barbering Industry, Antonio (founder of Antonio’s Barber Shop) himself will be teaching you all the Old School Barbering Techniques, the importance of using the best equipment on the market to give you that sharp finishing look and most importantly, to distinguish yourself from competition in order to keep your clients coming back to you.

The programme is 8 weeks long and includes a theoretical and practical exam during the final week.  

Target Audience

Applicants with no prior experience:

  • The target audience is mainly individuals who have no knowledge or experience of the hairdressing or barbering sector and wish to kick off a learning process to eventually puruse a career in barbering.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the hazards of health & safety in the salon
  • List the basic principles and practices of health & safety in the salon
  • List the potential hygiene risks in salon
  • Describe the personal hygiene practices necessary to work in a salon
  • List the different methods of sterilization
  • Draw a diagram of the structure of the skin and scalp and label it
  • Sequence the salon reception duties and importance of effective communication with clients and staff
  • Identify the correct face shape
  • Define different types of shampooing practices and identify relevant products
  • Practice salon reception duties
  • Correct any health & safety risks identified in the salon
  • Use  different sterilization options effectively
  • Demonstrate different shampooing techniques

Awarding Body

This qualification is awarded by AF & Co Academy. This qualification is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. MFHEA deems this Award in Basic Barbering Skills course to be at MQF/EQF Level 2 with 3 ECTS in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.

Entry Requirements

Considering the practical nature of the barbering skills, no academic qualifications are requested to join this programme, however, applicants are expected to:

  • be over the age of 16
  • be able to communicate in Maltese or English.

If an applicant does not meet the above entry requirements, you are encouraged to contact the Academy for an interview.

Assessment Mode

The programme is 8 weeks long and includes a theoretical and practical exam during the final week.

Language of Instruction & Delivery Mode

This programme will be delivered in English in our Campus in Balzan. 

You will follow all the lessons in class, through the use of your Cutting Tools Kit. The Cutting Tools Kit for this level needs to be purchased beforehand and a list of the said kit will be given as soon as you apply the course. You will need different models for the course.
